Eben A. Ayers was born October 4, 1890, in Watertown, New York. From 1908 to 1918 he worked as a journalist in Watertown, New York, and Elizabeth, New Jersey. From 1918 to 1919 he was a field clerk in the U.S. Army. From 1920 to 1936 he worked as a journalist with the Associated Press in New York City, and was the Associated Press bureau chief in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Boston, Massachusetts. From 1936 to 1939 Ayers was the news editor for the Providence Journal in Providence, Rhode Island....

Charles G. Ross was born on November 9, 1885 in Independence, Missouri. He graduated in 1901 from Independence High School with classmates Harry S. Truman and Bess Wallace, and he received an A.B. in 1905 from the University of Missouri. From 1908 to 1918 he was a member of the faculty of the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri.
